The Elrics remain heavily conflicted over their inability to rescue Nina. The Elrics find out from Hawkeye that Nina's father would have faced decommission and court-martial for what he did to her but both have been murdered and Mustang, Maes Hughes and Armstrong are investigating the scene. Initially unaware of Nina's fate, Ed sees his late mother turn into the result of his and Al's ill-fated attempt to resurrect her and Nina and Alexander turn into a chimera in a nightmare, although the manga only features the nightmare involving his mother. Using his Destruction Alchemy, Scar breaks down the chimera's insides, instantly ending her life before praying for her soul as he flees the scene. Nina starts to mourn for her father in spite of what he has done to her just before Scar delivers a mercy-killing to her, having realized that her future in this form can only be one of torment and suffering. The Tucker House is labeled a crime scene as Shou and Nina are held under house arrest in anticipation of Sewing-Life's incarceration and court-martial, but before his transport to Central City arrives, the Tuckers are visited by the State Alchemist-killer Scar, who assassinates Shou. Incapable of reversing the transmutation and not knowing what else to do, Ed and Al apologize to Nina and leave, but report Shou's actions to Colonel Mustang at Eastern HQ. But while Edward loses his temper and begins to thrash Tucker, Nina intervenes sadly, understanding the situation just enough to plead piteously for her father's life. As he attempts to pass Nina off as his second speech-capable chimera, however, Edward realizes the horror of what the Sewing-Life Alchemist has done when Nina speaks innocently to him from inside her new monstrous form. As Shou's yearly assessment approaches and his license comes into jeopardy, Nina attempts to console her depressed father, but her reassurances merely inspire the man to begin his depraved practice once again. Unfortunately, what the little girl did not understand was that her mom had not abandoned her family as Shou had claimed, but rather had become an unwilling human test subject in the secretly deranged State Alchemist's chimerical experiments and died. The Elrics immediately understand how Nina feels as they remember their own father paying little attention to them and declare their intention to play with Nina and Alexander and the three kids and dog spend most of the rest of the day playing together. The three kids (and canine) grow very close over the few days of their acquaintance after Nina confides in the boys that her loneliness is largely due to the fact that her mother had left her father two years ago, just before Shou Tucker received his State Alchemist certification, after which point his increasing immersion into his research greatly limited the amount of time he was able to spend with his young daughter. This immediately attracts Alphonse's attention but Ed gets annoyed at Al for getting distracted. A smaller opening means a longer injection time, which is beneficial when trying to accurately inject a tiny amount of fuel, such as when a car is nearly coasting. For one thing, by applying a little less electricity, the piezo crystals expand less so the injectors can open partway. Not only are piezo injectors more accurate than conventional solid injectors, they also can perform some tricks that are completely beyond the capabilities of their predecessors. Such precise fuel metering makes for improved combustion, which leads to better fuel economy and reduced emissions. For example, if the engine-control computer calls for an injector-opening time of 0.5 second, and the injector response shows that it opened for only 0.496 second, the computer can add a tiny bit of time to the next injection cycle to compensate. Piezo units also provide feedback by producing minute fluctuations in the electricity used to activate them. That makes for more precise control of the injection interval, which determines how much fuel is sprayed into the engine. For one thing, they open and close much faster than conventional injectors. Piezo injectors have a few key benefits that justify all of this bother. When the injection is complete, the voltage cuts off, the piezo stack shrinks, and a spring closes the pintle. But because this motion is in the wrong direction-down, not up-the addition of two tiny levers allows the expansion of the piezo stack to cause the pintle to be lifted and the fuel spray to begin. The stack produces 0.004 inch of movement-enough to move the pintle far enough to inject fuel. The Continental injector has hundreds of little piezo slices stacked on top of each other so that the combined expansion increases the total motion. That two-hundred-thousandths of an inch is not nearly enough to move an injector’s pintle, which is the part that seals the nozzle and must open to inject fuel. A slice of piezo material two-hundredths of an inch thick expands only about 0.00002 inch when it gets hit with roughly 140 volts of electricity. One reason is that the expansion of the piezo crystals is minuscule. Making these devices work, however, isn’t easy. Bosch, Continental, and Delphi, among others, have harnessed this peculiar property of expanding piezo material-rather than the usual electromagnet-to open the fuel-injector nozzle and precisely spray fuel into both gasoline and diesel engines. Take, for example, the precise metering necessary for modern-day fuel delivery. There are numerous places in a car where piezoelectric expansion can come in handy. But the process is also reversible, in that these same materials expand slightly when electricity is applied to them. There’s even a word for it: “piezoelectric,” which describes electricity resulting from pressure. If you’ve ever seen the sparks created by someone munching Wint-O-Green Life Savers in a darkened room, you’ll have witnessed this phenomenon: Certain crystalline materials, such as sugar, produce minute amounts of electricity when you squeeze them. If the S4 could function as a standalone mixer, it seems to me that such a setup would excel the S8 in every way (yes, I know you can route turntables as live sources, but that still requires a laptop). I still rock an analog mixer with my full vinyl rig, and think the S8 has a big advantage in working as a standalone mixer absent a laptop, but would still love to work these into my mobile setup. It seems to be the best of all worlds in that you get to keep your jog wheels and have full control over 4 decks without a need to ever switch control surfaces. I am surprised I haven’t seen more comments on using this new gear with a S4 setup. I have been using an old APC-40 for full control of the remix decks, but this seems like an much better option (although I do think >16 pads is a lot more fun than a mere 8 that require shifting – was considering moving to a Livid controller for that reason). I was loathe to ditch the jog wheels on my S4 quite yet, plus I got right before the S8 came out, so investing in a new full-size controller isn’t an option right now. “this could be the controller that gets many newer DJs off the S4/S2 fence and moves them over to a modern workflow” Let’s see what NI has up their sleeves though, a little birdy told us there is more to come. I suspect many of the touring, controller focused DJs will continue to prefer the X1 series for their compact size, while the CDJ contingent will stick with USB sticks until Native gives them a really good reason to bring out the laptop. We are somewhat concerned about the size, and heft of such a unit, but the level of feedback and control is significantly greater than the existing portable options. At one point in the stream during Uner’s set we got a look at something interesting, and will leave it up to you to speculate on what this means in the comments…ĭepending on the price, this could be the controller that gets many newer DJs off the S4/S2 fence and moves them over to a modern workflow without having to shell out $1.1k on a full S8. The screens and integrated remix deck controls are very convenient but probably not worth losing a customized workflow. If this controller is locked down like the S8, and we suspect it will be due to the screens, then many pro users might not adopt it. The mapping question is a big unknown and our sources have been mum on a response. What will it be called? (S2 is already taken – S1?) According to Uner’s Facebook page it’s the Kontrol D2.Is this intended to replace the X1 series of controllers ( we hope not)?.Can it be customized like the Kontrol X1 – specifically with MIDI mappings?.The workflow on this is likely the same as the Kontrol S8 but details under the hood remain elusive. A new jog wheel controller or CDJ alternative now seem unlikely. This controller cements the future workflow Traktor envisions for their users: Remix Deck-oriented, touch strip-centric controllers that match the S8 model. The unit will probably require a power supply (as used in the live stream which is viewable bellow).There appear to be some kind of new expandable feet which have angled the unit forward and brought it closer to mixer height.Based on the screens, and size this will probably be fairly expensive and certainly more than the X1 series, which sit in the $199 range today.The deck is switchable and is designed to control two songs in Traktor.It’s large!
